In short, psychologists and psychiatrists are mental health professionals who work in a complementary way. The psychologist helps the patient understand their problems and develop strategies to deal with them, while the psychiatrist can provide medication treatment when necessary to diminish symptons. This allows the person to learn and develop new coping skills.
Yes, psychotherapy is confidential. This means that everything you say during sessions with the psychologist will be kept confidential, with the exception of some specific situations, such as:
Ultimate risk of severe self harm or agression towards other people;
Abuse or neglect of children the elderly people;
Commited crimes.
The psychologist has an ethical duty to maintain the confidentiality of patient information, which guarantees a safe and welcoming environment for therapy.
